Television’s newcomers and underdogs ruled the 2010 Emmys, with the ABC comedy “Modern Family” and the HBO movie “Temple Grandin” picking up many of the night’s major awards.

CLICK HERE for the full list of 2010 Emmy Award winners.

“Modern Family” beat out Fox’s “Glee” to win the Emmy for best comedy series. The two much-lauded freshmen series went head to head in a number of categories and inspired skits featured in NBC’s three-hour-long Emmy telecast.

“Glee’s” finger prints were all over the opening song and dance, which starred the show’s cast and featured cameos by Kate Gosselin, Betty White, Jon Hamm, and Tina Fey. “Modern Family” got its moment during a mock plot brainstorming session that tried to work George Clooney into the show about a motley group of relatives.
Temple Grandin,” the biopic of an autistic woman turned doctor of animal science, dominated the TV miniseries/movie awards, winning best made-for-TV movie and best actress in a miniseries or movie for Claire Danes’ portrayal of Grandin. Grandin herself scored a standing ovation from the audience.
Modern Family” joins a long line of classic TV shows to win top comedy series for their first seasons. Among them: “All in the Family” (1971, the first of four wins), “Taxi” (1979, the first of three in a row), “Cheers” (1983, the first of four), “The Cosby Show” (1985), “The Golden Girls” (1986, the first of two in a row), “The Wonder Years” (1988) and “Frasier” (1994, the first of a record five in a row). “Modern Family” co-creator Lloyd shared in all of those wins for “Frasier” and also won a writing Emmy for that show in 1996.

The most recent laffer to win for its inaugural season was “30 Rock.” It took home the Emmy in 2007 and again in 2008 and last year. However, show creator and star Tina Fey must have been reading our pundits predictions, which were fool-proof on the comedy front. When drama actress winner Kyra Sedgwick asked Fey, who was presenting, to keep her Emmy while she read off her speech, she quipped it would be the only one she held that night.

Falco made Emmy history by beating Fey and the other funny ladies, thus becoming the first woman to have won the top awards for both comedy and drama series. Previously, she had prevailed in three of her six Emmy bids for the series

Modern Family triumphed with trophies for best comedy, best supporting actor and writing, while Mad Men won its third consecutive Emmy for best drama at the 62nd Primetime Emmys, held Sunday in Los Angeles and broadcast on NBC.

HBO, as usual, ruled in the movies categories, with multiple wins for Temple Grandin and the miniseries The Pacific. Al Pacino also won for You Don’t Know Jack.

Wins for ABC’s freshman comedy began early with trophies for creators Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd for writing, and co-star Eric Stonestreet (Cameron Tucker), who accepted the prize for supporting actor by saying “all I wanted to be was a clown in the circus when I was a kid growing up.” When accepting the Emmy for best comedy, Levitan gave a shout-out to all the show’s fans, big and small. “We are so thrilled that families are sitting down together to watch a television show, and we just wanted to say we are so happy that you have let us into your families,” he said on stage, with the full cast behind him.

In contrast, the creator of Mad Men behaved as if he never left the stage when accepting the Emmy for best drama. Having already won the gold earlier in the night for writing, Matthew Weiner took the stage at ceremony’s end by saying ”So where was I?” Remarkably, the actors on the drama have never won an Emmy, though castmembers like Jon Hamm, John Slattery and Elisabeth Moss have received multiple nominations.

Though Glee was a huge favorite going into tonight’s Emmys, the only prizes given to the Fox dramedy went to co-star Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester) and creator Ryan Murphy, who won for directing the pilot that first aired last May but ran again — as a director’s cut — at the start of the 2009-10 season.

Edie Falco, an Emmy favorite because of her work on The Sopranos, won for starring in Showtime’s Nurse Jackie. Falco was a critic pick but clearly, she wasn’t expecting to take home another statue and as a result, is now the first woman in Emmy history to post wins for a comedy and a drama. “Oh, this is the most ridiculous thing that has ever, ever happened in the history of this lovely award show,” she said on stage. “I’m not funny.”

Falco made Emmy history by beating Fey and the other funny ladies, thus becoming the first woman to have won the top awards for both comedy and drama series. Previously, she had prevailed in three of her six Emmy bids for the series “The Sopranos” (1999, 2001, 2003). Carroll O’Connor (“All in the Family,” “In the Heat of the Night”) and Robert Young (“Father Knows Best,” “Marcus Welby, MD”) are the only other double-sided champs.

The number of people forced to be evacuated due to the eruption of a volcano in Sumatra island, Indonesia, may rise to 34,000, spokesman of National Disaster Management Agency Priyadi Kardono said on Monday.

On Monday, more than 27,000 people have escaped their homes, he said.

The smoke from the eruption has also disturbed the flight from western area toward main airport, Palonia, in North Sumatra province, Airport Duty Manager at Polonia airport Agus Maulana said.

“Today a plane operated by Susi Air from Sibolga cancels flight to Polonia because of the smoke,” he told Xinhua over phone from the province.

The 2,400-meter high Mount Sibabung erupted for the second time on earlier Monday and spew ash and smoke up to more than 2,000 meters high and they keep enveloping the sky by Monday afternoon.

Transport Ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan said that should the wind blow direct to the east it will disturb more-frequent domestic flight, and should it direct toward the north it will disturb international aviation.

” At least 21,000 people have been evacuated from the area.

HBO’s critically acclaimed “Temple Grandin” told the remarkable real-life story of the bestselling author and groundbreaking agricultural scientist who struggled early in life to learn to cope with autism before the disease was widely known.

On Sunday, the biopic, which had to overcome what was widely perceived in the industry as challenging subject matter to make its way to the screen, claimed five Emmy prizes, including outstanding made for TV movie.

Attired in red and black rodeo gear, Grandin herself became a palpable presence at the ceremony, at one point, rising and excitedly swinging her hand lasso style from the audience. And while standing on stage after the movie had won its top award, she warmly embraced a sobbing executive producer Emily Gerson Saines, who said she found inspiration in Grandin’s life story as her own child had been diagnosed with autism.
Temple Grandin herself was on hand, along with her mother, to witness the near sweep for her namesake HBO movie that won top made-for-TV movie along with winning for Claire Danes’ lead performance, for directing, and for the supporting performances of Julia Ormand and David Strathairn. Winner Danes met the media backstage and said, “We worked very hard to tell a coherent, cogent story that charted Temple’s trajectory and growth…It was so special that her mother and she were here tonight.” She also admitted that she’s never had a greater challenge as an actress. “I;ve never worked harder on a performance, which was just epic in its scope. And I;ve never been ore inspired by a character I’ve played. I was deeply moved by Temple’s courage and resourcefulness, and the way she was such a pioneer in animal rights and animal science. She encouraged incredibly positive change in the world. I don’t expect to have anoither opportunity to play a character lke this anytime soon.”

A jubilant Temple — having already emotionally hugged producer Emily Gerson Saines during the award acceptance — said of Saines, “I absolutely knew a mom would do it right.” Saines herself added, “It’s really wonderful to be here tonight. We hope this movbie educates a lot of people about autism.

An LDS View On Glenn Beck & The ‘Restoring Honor’ Rally

Conservative commentator Glenn Beck says his revival-style rally at the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday was about restoring America’s honor and returning the country to the values on which it was founded.

Tens of thousands of people showed up for the event, which also featured former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Beck insists the rally was nonpolitical, but the event, which took place on the 47th anniversary of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and in the same place, was not without controversy.

The message: Support the troops; return to God.

Beck said his role was to wake America up to the backsliding of principles, values and most importantly, faith. His speech took on a spiritual tone as Beck urged the country to “turn back to God.”

“Look forward. Look West. Look to the heavens. Look to God and make your choice,” he said.

Beck told Fox News, the network that carries his weekday television program, that the rally was meant to reclaim the U.S. civil rights movement “from politics,” arguing that the movement was about “people of faith.”

The essence of the movement was about “people of faith who believe you have an equal right to justice,” he said in an interview that aired Sunday.
He called on them to open their Bibles and to go back to their own churches. He challenged them with the words of Thomas Jefferson to “question with boldness the very existence of God.” He urged them to put their families first and to set a good example. He asked parents to humble themselves and pray on their knees in front of their children. It was a pure gospel message……

As a Mormon, I have to consider an unintended message throughout Beck’s work, which has culminated in this event. That message is: “Mormons are Christian believers.” Despite nearly two centuries of misrepresentation and religious envy by sectarian Christianity, Beck has achieved the visibility, prominence, and has had the time day after day, week after week, to speak openly and truly about his core beliefs. Those statements of faith have disoriented and confused those who had previously believed the lies about Mormons. Just a few weeks ago, Beck discussed the heresies evident in “Liberation Theology” and declared his belief of individual salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. One confused person commented on Free Republic, a frequent forum for open Mormon-bashing, that “this would mean that Beck is ‘born-again.”

“I hope this movie is going to educate a lot of people about autism because there’s a lot of people who don’t understand it,” Grandin said backstage. “Somebody [with autism] might be a Silicon Valley genius, and somebody might be handicapped and non-verbal.”
