Scientific investigations have revealed that human DNA may be present in fragments of material that could provide crucial information about the fate of Amelia Earhart, the legendary pilot who disappeared 74 years ago while flying over the Pacific Ocean in a record attempt to circle the world at the equator. Scientists at the University of Oklahoma attempted to detect human DNA from three bone fragments recovered last year by a group of aviation enthusiasts on an expedition to Nikumaroro Island, 2,900km south of Hawaii.A doctor in Fiji determined the bones were of a human male, but the remains disappeared.
“There is simply no way that the Earhart aircraft could be anywhere near Papua New Guinea,” he said.
Mr Gillespie says radio transmissions and other evidence indicate Earhart landed on an atoll in the central Pacific and perished from a lack of food and water.

The parents of a California 13-year-old are under investigation after the girl told police she was being forced to go to Pakistan for an arranged marriage.
Jessie Bender, 13, from Hesperia, Calif., was last seen by her mother on Tuesday, February 22.
Melissa Bender, Jessie’s mother told KTLA that Jessie had been chatting with a man she met on Facebook, on the night she went missing.
“He was the last person she spoke to at 1:47 in the morning,” said Melissa.
Jessie Bender’s folks told authorities last month their daughter ran off because she didn’t want to go on a two-month family trip to her step-father’s native country. They then falsely claimed she was abducted by someone she met on Facebook, officials said.
However, after weeks of investigating leads that wrangled the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Office and police departments nationwide, authorities say it was all a lie.
“Bender family members misled detectives and withheld critical information,” San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Roxanne Walker said in a news release.

It is with great regret and reluctance that the Council of the London School of Economics and Political Science announces that it has accepted the resignation of Sir Howard Davies as Director. The Council has asked him to stay on until arrangements for a successor have been resolved.

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt has said he intends to accept News Corp’s plans to spin off Sky News to address concerns over its planned takeover of BSkyB.
Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp is proposing a deal to place the news operation into a separate company.
The undertakings propose News Corp will hive-off the loss-making Sky News as an independent public limited company.
Shares in the company would be distributed among the existing shareholders of BSkyB, in line with their shareholdings. News Corp would retain a 39.1% stake in the new company.
The undertakings by News Corp, released by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport show the new company would have a ten year carriage agreement with BSkyB, approved by the Secretary of State, and a seven year renewable brand licensing agreement.
While Sky News has an 8% share of the TV news market, the company is also the sole provider of mainstream news to the UK’s commerical radio stations.

According to Gillespie, a British officer found 13 bones, including a skull, of a likely castaway on the island in 1940 and sent them to Fiji. The officer also reported finding the remains of a woman’s shoe and a man’s shoe.
A doctor in Fiji determined the bones were of a human male, but the remains disappeared.
TIGHAR, using notes from the doctor, asked two forensic anthropologists to examine the report on the bones. They concluded they were of a female with northern European origin, Gillespie said.
