As daily deal sites, apps and newsletters proliferate (in fact, The New York Times revealed its high-end version Wednesday), the need for a tool to aggregate and present those deals in a meaningful way for consumers has become apparent.
The biggest change will be in the Bing mobile app a new Deals tab will provide a list of all deals near the user, organized by size of discount and location. Users will then be able to redeem the deal, save it on their phones for later use, or send it to a friend.
On the Bing Web site, users will have to click through to local results before seeing the deal — for instance, a search on “sushi in San Francisco” will show a list of nearby sushi places; click through to find more information and deals will appear where available.

Bing recently solidified its spot as second only to Google when it comes to worldwide search. Blog host WordPress.com was the target of a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack earlier today described by the company as the largest in its history.
As a result, a number of blogs–including those that are a part of WordPress’ VIP service–suffered connectivity issues. That includes the Financial Post, the National Post, TechCrunch, along with the service’s nearly 18 million hosted blogs. WordPress.com is currently being targeted by a extremely large Distributed Denial of Service attack which is affecting connectivity in some cases. The size of the attack is multiple Gigabits per second and tens of millions of packets per second.

The iPad 2 is largely an incremental improvement over the original, with a number of spec upgrades and a few new features, like dual cameras. The iPad 2 is thinner and lighter than the Xoom (or the original iPad), and has upgraded computing power across the board. But the experience of using it likely won’t be much different from the original iPad—which is good or bad, depending on your taste for iOS. It will be available from both Verizon and AT&T, whereas the Xoom is only available through Verizon.
Google and Microsoft, tech giants embroiled in a competitive battle that has spanned many years and will continue to rage for many years to come, have teamed up to take down a Texas-based patent troll’s geotagging patent that they claim has been used in lawsuits against more than 300 companies, many of which are their customers or partners.The defendant in the case, geo-location technology provider GeoTag, is trying to make coin from its US Patent, No. 5,930,474, entitled “Internet organizer for accessing geographically and topically based information”.
The patent was originally applied for in 1996 and granted in 1999. Microsoft and Google, who fear for their respective online mapping services to get targeted as well, claim there was prior art at the time of filing that the USPTO did not care to take into account.
Microsoft joined a competitor in 2002, AOL Time Warner Inc.’s Netscape search engine, to successfully invalidate a patent owned by a University of California scientist who was suing their customers over ways to access remote databases.

The inevitable has happened with the Android marketplace: Google pulled Wednesday nearly two dozen apps infected with malware capable of rooting devices and stealing data. Dozens of others are being investigatedOur friends at Android Central are reporting that anyone running version 2.2.2 is probably safe, as the vulnerability that is being exploited here was fixed the newest Froyo build, but anyone else was potentially at risk. We understand that Google has now pulled all offending apps that were discovered, but it’s best to be on your guard anyway.Redditor lompolo was investigating a suspicious app (Super Guitar Solo) that appeared to be a dupe of an existing app (Guitar Solo Lite), and found that it did indeed contain root exploits. Google pulled the code shortly after the guys at Android Police posted it, but it looks like at least 50,000 people have already downloaded the app, and there are a bunch more from the same publisher.
These apps are all pirated versions of popular games and utilities — an expeditious solution for busy hackers. Once downloaded, the apps root the user’s device using a method like rageagainstthecage, then use an Android executable file (APK) to nab user and device data, such as your mobile provider and user ID. There are lots of screenshots and videos on Mac OS X Lion round the web ever since the preview version was released by Apple. Yesterday Nilay Patel of Engadget posted the best quick overview I’ve seen so far.
He covers a lot of the new iOS-style features, as well as many other notable new features. One odd change, that Patel is not overly fond of (and I definitely agree) is that by default Dashboard no longer appears over the top of your current screen, but is in a space of its own. It’s that easy. We’re making it even better in iOS 4.3. If you’re sharing photos, you can use all of the built in slide show options. And now in 4.3, apps from the Store and even websites can do video or audio.”
