The famous Hollywood sign that for decades has marked the centre of the film-making world has been saved from demolition following a last-minute donation from porn baron Hugh Hefner.
The landmark has been at the centre of a $12.5m (£8.1m) campaign to stop it being torn down to make room for property development in the surrounding area. Playboy owner Hefner stepped in with a $900,000 donation that means the 138-acre site around the sign will now be protected.
California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger described the news as “the Hollywood ending we hoped for”. He said: “It’s a symbol of dreams and opportunity. The Hollywood sign will welcome dreamers, artists and Austrian bodybuilders for generations to come.” Read more…

langoliers
Watching the Langoliers on SyFy tonight. I read the novella at a breakneck speed in high school, and loved every bit of it. I mean, absolutely loved it!
.
For me, this mini-series falls flat — very flat. It’s not that it’s bead, exactly, but it’s empty — hollow. a few reasons strike me as I watch this:
.
1. Length. The story worked as a novella. Might have worked as a 2 hour movie. But at four hours on Syfy, it’s like a soap opera. Lots of talking, but a little thin on action. even the flashbacks become cumbersome. Unlike IT and The Stand and even Desperation, Read more…

ides of march
Today is March 15. Also known as the Ides of March on the Roman calendar. The day is significant because it’s the same day Julius Caesar was cut down on the floor of the Roman Senate, in 44 BC. It was a public assassination spearheaded by Caesar’s supposed supporter Marcus Junius Brutus — hence the famous line from Shakespeare’s play, “Et tu, Brute?” — and participated in by many of those present that day. Now, more than 2,000 years later, and thanks largely to the aforementioned playwright, people still know to “Beware the Ides of March!”
Hollywood fiction is rife with double-crosses. Some of the best films in history hinge on a sudden reversal of loyalty. Let’s face it: double-talk and surprise twists make for good storytelling. And there’s little that’s more surprising than a dude who you thought was a good guy turning around and shooting the hero in the face. Or more likely, missing by inches and paying the price for that treachery. What kind of Hollywood ending would it be if the good guys didn’t win? Read more…

peter graves
Peter Graves, who starred in TV’s Mission Impossible, and later spoofed his persona in the Airplane comedies, died in Los Angeles on Sunday. He was 83.
Graves died of an apparent heart attack outside his Los Angeles home, publicist Sandy Brokaw told the Associated Press. He had just returned from having brunch with his family when he collapsed, Brokaw said. Although one of his daughters administered CPR, she was not able to revive him.
Graves’s most famous role is perhaps that of Jim Phelps, who led a group of special agents who undertook dangerous – and seemingly impossible – missions in the long-running TV series Mission: Impossible. Younger audiences may remember him best as the wacky pilot in the 1980 comedy Airplane and Airplane II: The Sequel.
The actor was born Peter Aurness in Minneapolis and served in the Army Air Forces in 1944-1945, before going to study drama at the University of Minnesota as part if the G.I. Bill of Rights. His older brother, James Arness of Gunsmoke fame, was already working in Hollywood when Graves made the move, too.
Graves, who had classic good looks, was often cast as the hero in movies. However one of his most memorable early roles was a Nazi spy in Billy Wilder’s 1953 prisoner-of-war drama Stalag 17.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Graves, who he met in college, and three daughters, Amanda Lee Graves, Claudia King Graves and Kelly Jean Graves.

psych season finale

Psych wrapped up its fourth season last night, and I swear, Psych fans, I did give this season a fresh look and another try. Much as I tried to muster enthusiasm, I have to say: This was one cheesy season send-off.
The hour was built around a gimmick — someone (supposedly the mysterious “Mr. Yin”) was committing crimes that contained homages to Alfred Hitchcock films. I guess we were supposed to think this choice of director wasn’t random because of a flashback early on, that showed a young Shawn sneaking off to a movie house featuring a Hitchcock festival. And I’ll give the show points for structuring one murder as a salute to a minor Hitchcock, Frenzy. Read more…
