The Cannes Film Festival juries handed out their awards Sunday. Competition jury president Tim Burton announced the winner of the Palme d’Or: the complex critics’ fave from Thailand, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. The runner-up Grand Prix prize went to Of God and Men, directed by Xavier Beauvois. In a sign that the jury was not unanimous in support of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Biutiful (comme tout le monde), the best actor prize was shared by Biutiful’s Javier Bardem and Elio Germano for La Nostra Vita. Mike Leigh’s well-reviewed Another Year was shut out of the awards, as best actress went to Juliette Binoche for Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy, rather than Lesley Manville. Best director was a surprise”
The copy is an original as well,” she answered immediately, in a perfect confident English. “For example, filming is a copy of life, but I would say it is a recreation of life. You choose what to put into the space. The intensity of the result can be even more than what we call life.”

I remarked that she seemed to be quite intuitively connected with her director (which is not always the case: Catherine Deneuve once told me, responding to how she found Bunuel as a director, that she liked him “because he started shoots on time”). Was Juliette a chameleon, able to go into this Copy universe with Kiarostami, after having made films with Kieslowski on faith and God?
“I don’t see them as such opposites. Kieslowski is full of doubts; that was what I loved about him. He put things in question as well. He loved details. For him, the small showed the big. In Kieslowski’s Blue, the experience of the character is different than in Certified Copy. She doesn’t know what she likes, who she is; she is in an empty moment, trying to put herself back into reality, not knowing how to handle it, put the past back.”
“With this film, I felt completely inside the character: in her inside anxiety of love, being loved, wanting to be seen. During the shoot, while walking on these very uncomfortable cobbles, she is never certain she has been seen. Abbas’ camera is generous. He does not try to edit, to take something out of me. The seeing and sharing between us allowed me to open up. It is rare to have a male director put the camera so generously on a woman. ”
“The challenge of acting in general,” she noted. “Is to be as close as possible to the camera. The camera is a mirror. The fact of being seen means that something inside me has to be seen — the inside landscapes. You can only get into that if you like jumping into the unknown.”
She paused to discuss her friendship with Kiarostami. Apparently, they had met over a decade ago, and had a coup de foudre friendship — and he had been waiting all these years for the right film to write for her. They naturally had “a friend connection” because he loves poetry as she does. And she paints, and Kiarostami paints.
The Thai movie “Lung Boonmee Raluek Chat” was the surprise winner of the top award at the Cannes Film Festival, the world’s leading cinema competition.
Directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, the Palme d’Or winner — whose title translates as “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives” — is about a man who is dying of kidney failure in the country and is joined by the ghost of his dead wife and by his missing son.
The prize for best director went to Mathieu Amalric for “Tournee” (“On Tour”), which portrayed a team of fleshy neo- burlesque dancers on the road in France.
Weerasethakul has gained strong recognition at film festivals around the world over the years, wining the 2004 jury prize in Cannes for Tropical Malady about gay lovers and a trek to find a metamorphosed tiger.
Two years earlier, he gained the festival’s Un Certain Regard section’s top prize for Blissfully Yours.
This year’s race for the coveted Palme d’Or came down to less than a handful films, with many festival goers considering this year’s programme to be somewhat patchy.
But then the motion-picture business is only slowly emerging from the financial crisis that swept the global economy over the last more than two years.
The Cannes’ jury headed up by US director Tim Burton awarded the festival’s second prize, the Grand Prix, to French director Xavier Beauvois for his movie Des Hommes et des Dieux (Of Gods and Men).
The 43-year-old Beauvois’ movie is a compelling story about a group of monks living in Algeria during a period of rising Islamic fundamentalist violence.
It is the third consecutive year that a French director has won one of the festival’s top awards.

Rocker Bret Michaels, one of the most famous Type 1 diabetics, advanced to the finals of the Celebrity Apprentice in a prerecorded episode that aired last night. In the final challenge, Michaels and Holly Robinson Peete have to create a new Snapple flavor and market the product. Michaels is creating a “diet” drink because it doesn’t contain sugar.
The winner will take home a $250,000 prize, plus a slice of sales of the drink, for their charity. Michaels, who has already won $140,000 so far this season, is competing for the American Diabetes Association and its summer camps for kids with diabetes. Peete is competing for her charity, the HollyRod Foundation, which supports families of the seriously ill. Peete’s son has autism.
To make it to the finals, Michaels outlasted Sharon Osbourne, celebrity chef Curtis Stone and wrestler Maria Kanellis, who were all fired during the two-hour episode Sunday.
Michaels is hoping to return to New York for the live season finale of the Celebrity Apprentice on Sunday May 23, 2010 after suffering a life-threatening brain hemorrhage last month. Michaels has already announced that he plans his musical comeback on May 28, 2010 at a concert in Biloxi, Mississippi and is slated to appear in an Oprah Winfrey Show episode scheduled to air on Wednesday May 19, 2010.
Holly Robinson Peete has already won $350,000 for her charity, and Bret Michaels has won $140,000 for his. The winner of the final challenge will win $250,000 for their charity.
To start off, Bret Michaels made sure he was organized in his task. Daryl Strawberry and Summer Sanders are Bret Michaels’ teammates for the final task. They were incredibly impressed with Bret Michaels’ organization. Daryl Strawberry is happy to have the chance to redeem himself.
Holly Robinson Peete’s team is Curtis Stone and Maria Kanellis. She was hoping to get Summer Sanders, so she is probably going to be upset that Bret Michaels got Summer Sanders. Right off the bat, she started telling Maria to stop doing creative on the first day.
The first day was all about the flavors. Each team had to negotiate the flavors they could use since neither person could have the same flavors in their drinks. Curtis Stone negotiated for Holly. Bret Michaels wanted the diet Snapple because he has diabetes. Both teams really wanted passion fruit. Michaels also wanted cinnamon while Robinson Peete wanted strawberry. Bret Michaels gave up passion fruit very easily. It was really sad what Curtis Stone did.

And I was surprised at how Anna’s story line concluded and not sure if Jeremy will actually turn or whether Elena, Damon and Stefan will be able to prevent that.

Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner, who made his fortune showcasing one type of Hollywood beauty, is sharing his wealth to save another.A $900,000 donation from Hefner gives fundraisers the $12.5 million needed to buy and protect the 138 acres behind the world-famous Hollywood sign, they announced Monday.
A public land trust was formed to buy the land out of fear that luxury homes would be built near the landmark.
“Today, we have the Hollywood ending we hoped for, and now, Cahuenga Peak will be forever protected by adding it to Griffith Park,” trust President Will Rogers said.
Fundraisers covered the famous sign for several days earlier this year to make their point about its importance. Instead, it read, “Save the Peak.”
Hefner called the sign “Hollywood’s Eiffel Tower.”
“My childhood dreams and fantasies came from the movies, and the images created in Hollywood had a major influence on my life and Playboy,” Hefner said.
The land was once bought by aviation pioneer and movie mogul Howard Hughes, who reportedly planned to build a love nest on the peak.
The land is zoned for luxury homes, but no one has ever built on it. ]]>
