The Cannes Film Festival juries handed out their awards Sunday. Competition jury president Tim Burton announced the winner of the Palme d’Or: the complex critics’ fave from Thailand, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. The runner-up Grand Prix prize went to Of God and Men, directed by Xavier Beauvois. In a sign that the jury was not unanimous in support of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Biutiful (comme tout le monde), the best actor prize was shared by Biutiful’s Javier Bardem and Elio Germano for La Nostra Vita. Mike Leigh’s well-reviewed Another Year was shut out of the awards, as best actress went to Juliette Binoche for Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy, rather than Lesley Manville. The Thai movie “Lung Boonmee Raluek Chat” was the surprise winner of the top award at the Cannes Film Festival, the world’s leading cinema competition.
Directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, the Palme d’Or winner — whose title translates as “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives” — is about a man who is dying of kidney failure in the country and is joined by the ghost of his dead wife and by his missing son.

Rocker Bret Michaels, one of the most famous Type 1 diabetics, advanced to the finals of the Celebrity Apprentice in a prerecorded episode that aired last night. In the final challenge, Michaels and Holly Robinson Peete have to create a new Snapple flavor and market the product. Michaels is creating a “diet” drink because it doesn’t contain sugar.
The winner will take home a $250,000 prize, plus a slice of sales of the drink, for their charity. Michaels, who has already won $140,000 so far this season, is competing for the American Diabetes Association and its summer camps for kids with diabetes. Peete is competing for her charity, the HollyRod Foundation, which supports families of the seriously ill. Peete’s son has autism.

Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner, who made his fortune showcasing one type of Hollywood beauty, is sharing his wealth to save another.
A $900,000 donation from Hefner gives fundraisers the $12.5 million needed to buy and protect the 138 acres behind the world-famous Hollywood sign, they announced Monday.
A public land trust was formed to buy the land out of fear that luxury homes would be built near the landmark.
“Today, we have the Hollywood ending we hoped for, and now, Cahuenga Peak will be forever protected by adding it to Griffith Park,” trust President Will Rogers said. (more…)
The famous Hollywood sign that for decades has marked the centre of the film-making world has been saved from demolition following a last-minute donation from porn baron Hugh Hefner.
The landmark has been at the centre of a $12.5m (£8.1m) campaign to stop it being torn down to make room for property development in the surrounding area. Playboy owner Hefner stepped in with a $900,000 donation that means the 138-acre site around the sign will now be protected.
California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger described the news as “the Hollywood ending we hoped for”. He said: “It’s a symbol of dreams and opportunity. The Hollywood sign will welcome dreamers, artists and Austrian bodybuilders for generations to come.” (more…)
