For years, the month of March was a downer, thanks to the FCAT. March may soon find its way back into the hearts of students and teachers.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers has been working to replace the high school Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test with end-of-course exams. The FCAT would be gradually replaced over the next four years, being completely phased out by the 2014-2015 school year.

These exams would be aligned with specific courses.

“I like the idea of end-of-course exams because there will be a direct assessment of the standards taught in a subject,” Principal Allen Burch said. “As it exists, FCAT is a test based on the standards, but is loosely coupled to a core class. With end-of-course exams, we will move away from grade-level standards and toward measuring a student’s knowledge in a specific academic subject.”

New York, Tennessee, Virginia, Mississippi and Maryland are among the states that use end-of-course exams as a graduation requirement. New York has been using Regents Exams since 1878 to test students’ knowledge and skill levels. Read more…
