National University (NU) matched defending champion Ateneo de Manila University’s immaculate 4-0 record on Saturday by ripping apart De La Salle-Zobel quintet, 74-62 to share the top spot in the 73rd UAAP juniors basketball tournament at the San Juan Arena.
Banking on its cerebral quarterbacking, hustle and quickness, NU ably neutralized the taller and heftier Junior Archers’ patented halfcourt trapping defense with a spate of fastbreak lay-ups, resulting in 30 transition points that proved too much for the visibly lost Season 72 runners-up who only managed 7 points in the entire third quarter.
Equally hurting La Salle was the Bullpups’ 20 assists mostly from outlet feeds which repeatedly forced the Junior Archers to give up cheap fouls to break the transition play.
With his shooting guns triggering one run after the other, burly guard Roque Estoce again led the Bullpups on a near-flawless 3-of-4 sniping from beyond en route to a team-high 23 points plus 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks.
The Bullpups unleashed a dizzying 18-2 salvo bridging the third and fourth quarters to post the biggest lead of the game at 58-28 and virtually lock the count in favor of NU.
Yet La Salle did not surrender without a fight as the Junior Archers went on an 8-2 surge to inch closer at 61-48. But 2 free throws and a jumper form Jonel Parungao kept the Junior Archers at bay, 65-48, with 4:17 left to play.
La Salle finalized the tally by clustering 8 straight points, including 6 from the stripe.
Alexander Torres led the Junior Archers with 28 points while Joseph Tempongko added 10.
Estoce got ample support from Parungao and Kevin Lara who chipped in 18 and 10 points, respectively. Prior to NU’s clinical dismantling of La Salle, the Eaglets grounded the low-flying Adamson University Baby Falcons, 78-61, in the third game with Ateneo big man Von Pessumal registering a career-high 23 points on top of 9 rebounds and 3 assists.
In other matches, University of Santo Tomas walloped University of the Philippines Integrated School, 120-69, behind the 37-point, 11-rebound explosion of Kevin Ferrer, while Far Eastern University trounced University of the East, 93-68.

:Concordia University Texas and Leander ISD faculty and students soon venture to map and characterize numerous Concordia Preserve, a nature and the nature reserve for the land the university recently acquired. The reserve has not been explored extensively in well over a decade.Concordia and 85,000 received a grant through the State Farm Youth Advisory Board in the spring that will finance a project for the reserves, and other service-learning activities.
“There has never been a comprehensive study to know exactly what kind of plants and animals are out there,” said Michael Moyer, dean of the Faculty of Concord.Concordia moved its campus from downtown Austin to the 386-acre tract of land near RM 620 and RM 2222 in 2008. Approximately 250 acres of the property is part of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, or BCP. The BCP is made up of about 28,500 acres around Travis County and was created to protect the habitat of eight endangered species and 27 other at-risk species, while at the same time allowing development to occur.
Travis County helps manage the Concordia Preserve, and access is limited.
“You can only go in there if you have a scientific reason and that in itself has to be approved, both by the university and by individuals from Travis County,” Moyer said.

Last year’s Target Summer Pops concerts were a surprising delight, so it’s good to see Symphony Silicon Valley returning with the outdoor series later this month.
Things kick off with a little star power July 24 as acclaimed pianist Jon Nakamatsu joins the orchestra for a tribute to American composers. And Mercury News sports columnist Mark Purdy will be narrating “Casey at the Bat” during the Family Day ice cream social on July 25.
The series continues July 30 to Aug. 1 with concerts focusing on the salsa sounds of New York City, the ladies of Broadway and the “Hit Parade” sounds of the 1940s and ’50s.
The best thing about the evening concerts — which all take place on the grassy Paseo de San Carlos mall at San Jose State University — is that they don’t cost a dime to attend.

Perelman blamed the “unjust” decisions of the “organized mathematician community” for his decision, saying American mathematician Richard Hamilton, ignored by the institute, had contributed to proving the theorem no less than Perelman himself.

Conelius Jones had hoped to arrive in Ann Arbor this summer and join what is already a crowded competition for Michigan’s starting quarterback job.
But after his ACT score fell 20 points short of qualifying, the Spartanburg (S.C.) High School standout will have to wait.
Jones will instead enroll at Fork Union Military School, his coach, Freddie Brown said Monday. But just because the timing of his planned enrollment at Michigan didn’t work out the way he anticipated, Jones’ allegiances remain with the Wolverines.
“He only wants to go to Michigan,” Brown said. “He’s not going to go anywhere except for Michigan and so Michigan is going to get him back.”Across the nation, less than one percent of students earn a perfect score. In the high school graduating class of 2009, only 638 of almost 1.5 million students received a perfect score.
Parkway Central High School students have the fourth-highest ACT scores of the 524 Missouri school districts, averaging a score of 24.1.
