The American picked to lead oil giant BP pledged Tuesday — the same day workers in Michigan and Louisiana fought two other but much smaller spills — that his company will remain committed to the oil-washed Gulf of Mexico even after the busted well is sealed.
Robert Dudley will become BP’s first non-British chief executive, the company said as it reported a record quarterly $17 billion loss, and set aside $32.2 billion to cover costs from the spill for which it says it will claim a $9.9 billion taxation credit. (more…)

Strong sales of its latest Android-powered smartphones are expected to boost second-quarter results for Motorola Inc. (MOT) this week, showcasing the company’s effort to revive its mobile-device business.
Motorola is slated to report its second-quarter results on Thursday before the opening bell.
For the second quarter, Wall Street expects Motorola to report earnings of 8 cents a share on revenue of $5.2 billion, according to estimates from FactSet Research. The company earned a penny a share from continuing operations on revenue of $5.5 billion in the same period last year. (more…)

By the end of 2011, Ford said, it expects to move from an automotive net debt position to a net cash position — in other words, it will have more cash than debt. “It’s clearly a really positive development,” said CEO Alan Mulally, on the earnings conference call Friday. “We will be able to continue to improve the balance sheet and pay down debt.” (more…)
