Windows Mobile to Retire; Windows Phone is Born
Windows Mobile is getting a new name, Windows Phone, with the introduction of Windows Phone 7, which is slated to be released in October. Windows Phone 7 test units from LG and Samsung were shipped today to different developers around the globe.
Windows Phone 7 is not just a Windows Mobile facelift; it was created from the ground up. The new Windows OS will replace the Windows Mobile 6.5, aiming to offer high-end smartphone users something different from Apple’s iOS 4, among other smartphone OS options.

The Windows Mobile 6.5 will not be able to upgrade to Windows Phone 7 via software installation, so different is the news system. Thus far, the software has received positive reviews from several prestigious technology websites.

“Windows Phone 7 is so different from Windows Mobile as to be unrecognizable. After spending a few days with an early prototype phone running the technical preview software, I can say that’s a pretty good thing,” writes PC Magazine’s Lance Ulanoff.
“We were extremely surprised and impressed by the software’s touch responsiveness and speed. In fact, this is probably the most accurate and nuanced touch response this side of iOS4,” writes Engadget’s Joshua Topolsky.

Although Windows Phone 7 was very well received as a whole, it lacked certain abilities such as basic multi-tasking for apps. It also does not at present support copy and paste, according to Engadget.
