Unemployment Extension : July 20, 2010 Senate Vote – Great news for the 2.5 million Americans who have been waiting for help, earlier today the U.S. Senate has finally taken a decisive step towards extending long-term unemployment aid to those who need it.
By a vote of 60-40 the Senate has approved to move forward with reauthorizing unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless but there is still a lot of work to be done.
Since end of May a majority of Republicans and few conservative Democrats have been able to kill bills that were intended to renew the aid.
Votes were read aloud, and when the clerk reached newly appointed Sen. Carte Goodwin “aye” vote applause came from the Democrats in the building.
Now the unemployment cover extension bill has been passed for another Senate vote that is also expected for today.

This is a bill millions of Americans have been waiting for, and we here at TPI have been documenting the state of the bill that has been delayed for a long time by the GOP. Thanks to this bill, the federal unemployment benefit program will be extended through the end of November, maintaining the four federal tiers and federal support of the two tiers of the Extended Benefits program for a total of up to 99 weeks in hardest-hit states.

This bill will be retroactive to June 2 when the unemployment cover program expired.
For the record, H.R. 4213 will be the unemployment extension bill that will be voted upon. This is not a Tier 5 unemployment bill. However, this bill proposes to extend the filing deadline for existing tiers (Tiers 1- 4) of unemployment benefits until November 30, 2010 and extend for three month the closing deadline for first-time home buyers looking to get the $8,000 tax credit.
